JERUSALEM, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv announced on Saturday evening the appointment of Ronny Deila as head coach until the end of the season.
The 50-year-old Norwegian replaces Serbia's Zarko Lazetic, who was dismissed following Maccabi's defeat to bitter city rival Hapoel Tel Aviv. The decision comes during a disappointing campaign for Maccabi, which saw the club fall out of contention for the league title and finish last in the Europa League's 36-team league phase.
Deila's major coaching achievements include winning the Norwegian championship with Stromsgodset in 2013, securing back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles with Celtic in 2015 and 2016, and lifting the MLS Cup with New York City FC in 2021.
During his career, Deila has also served as head coach at Valerenga in Norway, as well as Belgian clubs Standard Liege and Club Brugge, and MLS side Atlanta United.
Scotland's former star Kenny Miller and former Norwegian midfielder Kenneth Dokken have been appointed as Deila's assistant coaches.
"I am pleased to join a club with such a rich history," Deila said. "I am fully aware that success only comes through hard work and commitment."
Maccabi owner Mitch Goldhar added, "Ronny brings a proven track record, significant experience, and strong leadership qualities." ■
